Event: The U.S. Embassy is monitoring reports of illegal checkpoints being enforced by the community of Tasajera, Magdalena.
Individuals have reportedly appeared on the Cienaga-Barranquilla Road, on the Troncal del Caribe, and at the height of the corregimiento from Tasajera, in the municipality of Pueblo Viejo, Magdalena with stones, sticks, and weapons demanding money from drivers and occupants of vehicles to let them pass.
According to authorities, the community is protesting their lack of utility services, but the protest is also being used by criminals to demand money from travelers to avoid damage to their vehicles. Authorities confirmed that no damage or injuries have happened, but some drivers have made the decision to pay the vandals to avoid confrontation.
