Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Bogota – Explosion in Tibu May 24, 2023

Location: Tibu, Norte de Santander, Colombia

Event:  On May 24, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m. the detonation of an explosive device on a police patrol in Tibu on the principal road toward Cucuta killed two police officers and one civilian, and injured four police officers. The National Liberation Army (ELN) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The U.S. Department of State advises citizens to reconsider travel to Colombia due to crime and terrorism and to exercise increased caution in Colombia due to civil unrest and kidnapping. The Department advises citizens not to travel to Colombian departments Arauca, Cauca (excluding Popayán), and Norte de Santander due to crime and terrorism and not to travel to the Colombia-Venezuela border region due to crime, kidnapping, and risk of detention when crossing into Venezuela from Colombia.
