Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Bogota

Location: Department of Nariño, Colombia

Event: Recent reporting indicates a threat of continued kidnappings within the department of Nariño, following the kidnapping and deaths of three Ecuadorian journalists as well as the April 17, 2018 kidnapping of an Ecuadorian couple near the Colombia-Ecuador border.  Embassy personnel may not travel to the Department of Nariño without express permission, and may be required to use armored vehicles, military escort, and/or personnel trackers when traveling in the region.  The embassy has limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in the region.

Actions to Take:

  • Do not travel to Nariño.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Review your personal security plans.
