The main criminal threat facing Colombian justice, at this time, is the emergence of criminal organizations from the remnants of the paramilitary organizations, drug trafficking groups and guerrilla units. These organized criminal groups, (“Bandas Criminales” or BACRIM) have stepped into the void of the paramilitary organizations and are responsible for much of the increased violence and drug trafficking throughout the country. As a result, combating these organizations is now a major Colombian law enforcement and security concern. JSRP has started working with the newly formed BACRIM unit and will be providing:
- $1 million to develop secure offices in Medellin, Cartagena, Cali, Monteria, Pasto, Tumaco, Villavicencio, and Neiva
- Training and Technical Assistance for prosecutors and investigators
- Equipment
- Development of the Unit’s organizational structure
- Development of the Unit´s investigation and prosecution strategy
- Interaction with US investigators and prosecutors
